PLC Hosts Induction Workshop for Venue Managers

Abu Dhabi: 30 January 2014
The Pro League Committee hosted a two-day induction workshop for all new Venue Managers on 26th and 27th January 2014, attended by representatives of clubs as they prepare to embark on the Venue Manager scheme initiated by the PLC’s Executive Office.
The scheme will see each club employ a dedicated Emirati professional as Venue Manager to oversee stadium operations and improve match day experience, with their salary being subsidized by the PLC. Colin Smith, CEO of the Pro League Committee, opened the workshop with a welcoming speech in which he congratulated the Venue Managers on being selected and touched on the benefits of attending the workshop to prepare them for assuming their new position.
Michelle Chai, PLC Technical & Competitions Director, gave an informative and interactive presentation detailing the structure of FIFA and the various associations, committees and unions before honing in on the objectives behind introducing the new Venue Manager position at all 14 professional clubs in the UAE, with the main reasons being the standardization of procedures in all stadia to improve match day organisation and experience, and to ensure that stadium operations meet global standards. Chai also explained the mechanism for scheduling the fixture list each season, highlighting the various factors taken into consideration when compiling the fixture calendar such as FIFA days, National Team camps, predicted weather conditions, and prayer timings.
The second day of the workshop saw a review of the competition regulations, and an evaluation of the importance of the pre-match countdown and match day checklist to ensure that match operations run smoothly. Chai also reviewed the roles of the various different Match Officials the Venue Managers will be dealing with on match days, before explaining the responsibilities and expectations of the Venue Manager role itself; namely ensuring the optimum environment in which spectators can enjoy attending a match through the provision of clean and comfortable seating, ample food and beverage offerings, full compliance with health and safety regulations, and ease of access when visiting the stadium to facilitate the best possible all-round match day experience.
The two-day induction workshop was the first in a series of planned lectures, training sessions and site visits scheduled over the coming period to assist the Venue Managers in preparing for their new roles.
