Al Jazira extended their lead at the top of the Arabian Gulf League table to six points with a convincing 3-1 win over title rivals Al Ain at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium in a re-scheduled Arabian Gulf League round 8 match.
Al Ain started the game on the front foot with Danilo Asprilla running havoc through the left side of Al Jazira's defence before firing in a low shot that was saved by Al Jazira Captain Ali Khaseif.
In his first return to the ground where he won the AFC Champions League with Hyundai Jeonbuk Motors two months ago, Leonardo Pereira was again a constant threat on Al Ain and just over half an hour into the game, he hit a curling free-kick from 25 yards out but Khaled Essa reacted quickly and held on to the ball.
Former Al Ain full back Mohamed Fawzi, playing in a new midfield role, snuck into Al Ain's penalty box and met a well-executed through pass from Ailton Almeida with a fierce first time shot into the back of Khaled Essa's net to give Al Jazira the lead.
Al Ain responded with a good spell of possession and Asprilla advanced from the left and curled a shot from just outside the box but Khaseif was in the right place to save and keep the score at 1-0 going into the break.
In the second half, Al Ain were again on the attack while Al Jazira continued to sit deep and played on the counter attack. Omar Abdulrahman tried to find the net from the free kick but his attempt went inches wide of Khaseif's goal in the 58th minute.
Leonardo was a handful for Al Ain again as Yaqoob Al Hosani's perfectly weighted pass on the volley from the edge of Al Jazira's penalty box released the Brazilian one-on-one with Al Ain goalkeeper from 40 yards out. Leonardo advanced confidently and finished in off the post for a second Al Jazira goal.
Omar Abdulrahman scored the pick of the goals with a thunderous left-footed drive from 30 yards out. Khaseif's desperate attempts to save went in vain as Al Ain made it 2-1.
Abdulrahman's goal set the game up for a grand finale. The last 5 minutes saw Al Ain boss Zlatko Dalic go all out attack, taking off centre-back Moanad Salem and introducing striker Saeed Al Kateeri. In turn Al Jazira's Henk ten Cate brought pacey forward Ahmed Al Hashemi in place of the exhausted Ailton Almeida.
Al Hashemi made an instant impact, finding Mabkhout with a wonderful pass over the head of Al Ain's Ahmed Barman. Al Jazira's no.7 made no mistakes when one-on-one with Essa and put a final nail in the coffin of Al Ain's hopes with a third goal for ‘The Pride of Abu Dhabi'.
Despite five minutes of added time, Al Ain failed to score and Al Jazira registered their first ever league win at Hazza bin Zayed Stadium.
The win sees Al Jazira reach 38 points, extending their lead at the top of the table to six points. Al Ain meanwhile, stay third with 31 points.
