www.uaeproleague.ae: Feb. 28, 2020
Al Jazira fell to a surprise 1-0 defeat against Khorakkan, at Mohammad Bin Zayed Stadium in matchweek 17 of the Arabian Gulf League on Friday.
The Pride of Abu Dhabi started on the front foot, when Thulani Serero's strike from the edge of the box was denied by Mohammed Yousef to reach Keno, whose effort from the rebound was cleared off the goalline by Ahmed Eisa in the 17th minute.
Against the run of play, Khorfakkan broke the deadlock in the 36th minute. Ramon Lopes released Antonio Junior up the left flank and the latter's ground cross was met by Ricardo Mendes, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.
The Green Eagles continued to impress in the second half, when they nearly doubled the scoreline through Dodo, who received a defence-splitting long through pass behind Al Jazira's backline and advanced towards the box, but his shot went well over the crossbar in the 70th minute.
In the dying moments of the game, Al Jazira nearly leveled things up through friendly fire, however, Eisa's poor clearance was denied by the woodwork.
Following the defeat, Al Jazira occupy the fourth spot with 30 points before facing Kalba next week. Meanwhile, Khorfakkan remain rock bottom at the league table with 12 points ahead of their encounter against Bani Yas in matchweek 18 of the Arabian Gulf League.
