Al Jazira 1:1 Sharjah. AGL. Match Summary

News 22 Jan. 2016
Sharjah came back from a goal down at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium to share the spoils with Al Jazira in a 1-1 draw in Round 15 of the Arabian Gulf League. Kenwyne Jones had given the hosts the lead but Wanderley Santos struck his 9th AGL goal of the season to move Sharjah onto 15 points in 11th place, just one point and one position behind Al Jazira.
In the 23rd minute Thiago Neves fired a free kick into the side netting for the hosts and soon after, new acquisitions Kenwyne Jones and Angel Lafita combined well to set up a chance, seeing the latter’s shot saved by Sharjah shot-stopper Rashid Ahmed. Young striker Sultan Al Shamsi showed his inexperience as he elected to shoot straight at the goalkeeper rather than cross for teammate Ali Mabkhout, who was waiting in the box for a delivery, and Sharjah’s absence-hit side stood strong to deal well with a number of Al Jazira set pieces. Maicosuel worked goalkeeper Ali Khaseif with an on-target free kick right before the half time whistle, but the two sides remained deadlocked at the break.
Three minutes after the restart it took some solid defending from Sharjah’s back line to keep a combination of Sultan Al Shamsi, Ali Mabkhout and Kenwyne Jones at bay, but in the 54th minute it was the Trinidad & Tobago international Jones who netted his first Arabian Gulf League goal since arriving in the UAE this transfer window, heading into the back of the net to give Al Jazira a 1-0 lead before debuting his trademark acrobatic flip celebration at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium. The hosts’ lead didn’t last long, though, as Sharjah’s top scorer Wanderley Santos collected a long ball before cutting in from the right and dancing past his defender to slot a composed finish past Khaseif from a tight angle, levelling for the visitors at 1-1 in the 59th minute. Four minutes later Thiago Neves curled a strike from distance against the crossbar as the woodwork prevented Al Jazira from regaining their lead, whilst in the 83rd minute Sharjah were perilously close to snatching the lead with a volleyed effort from Wanderley whistling past the post.
