Fujairah kept their Arabian Gulf League survival hopes alive for another round with an impressive 3-1 victory away at Al Jazira in Round 24. A brace from Patrick Eze and a Hassan Maatouk goal earned all three points for the relegation-threatened side at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium, moving them onto a tally of 23 – just three away from safety – with two rounds remaining to save themselves.

The hosts took an early lead through a 9th-minute diving header from Thiago Neves, but Fujairah mounted a spirited comeback right before the interval as Patrick Eze found the net in the 43rd minute with a terrific curling free kick, and Hassan Maatouk struck to snatch the lead in the 45th minute to send the visitors in the happier of the two sides at the break. Five minutes after the restart Al Jazira had a golden chance to get back on level terms but the opportunity was squandered when Khalfan Mubarak’s chipped penalty crashed back off the crossbar, after Ahmed Alattas had earned a spot kick by being bundled over by Ibraheim Alalawi. In the 63rd minute it took a brave clearance from Al Jazira goalkeeper Khalid Senaani to deny Hassan Maatouk from streaming clean through on goal, and ten minutes later Al Jazira’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a blow as defender Abdullah Mousa was sent off for his second booking of the game to leave the hosts down to 10 men and chasing the lead. Moments later Patrick Eze thrashed an effort into the side netting, but by the 90th minute the Nigerian striker had made it 3-1 win a fantastic individual effort, holding off the attentions of four Al Jazira defenders to squeeze a cross-goal strike in at the far post and wrap up an invaluable win.
