Arabian Gulf League top goalscorer Ali Mabkhout scored a late brace at Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium as Al Jazira emerged 2-0 winners over Al Ain in round 21 of the Arabian Gulf League. The win moves Al Jazira a step closer to the Arabian Gulf League title as they reach 53 points, six points clear of their nearest chasers Al Ahli with six rounds to go.
Al Ain drift ten points behind and could find themselves fourth by the end of the round should Al Wasl collect any points against Emirates later in the week.
Ahead of the match, a number of women working were honoured as part of the PLC's "Women's Day Round" initiative. The list includes Rasha Khalil from Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank; Maha Alqubaisi, Eman Yassin, Sofia Costa,Francisca Correia from LIVE Production; Mona Al Marzooqi - Photographer at The National Newspaper; in addition to Haya Taha - Volunteers Superintendent, Sara Shaheen, Hiba Mubarak - Social Media Editor, Aya Masri - Events Supervisor, Naz - Sales all from Al Ain Club.
In the 25th minute Al Ain's attacking trio, Omar Abdulrahman, Caio Lucas and Danilo Asprilla combined for a quick attacking move from the right wing, culminating in Al Ain Captain Omar Abdulrahman supplying a perfectly weighted through pass to Caio, sending the Brazilian one-on-one on Al Jazira goalkeeper Ali Khaseif. With the angle tightening, Caio attempted to find the far corner, but his shot went just wide.
Three minutes later, ‘The Boss' were again so close to breaking the deadlock, the captain again finding Asprilla with a defence-splitting pass. The Colombian successfully rounded Khaseif but found himself in an impossible angle so he attempted to square the ball to Mohammed Abdulrahman instead, but his cross was intercepted by the home side's defence and Al Jazira survived to go into the break level.
Al Ain started the second half with a bang; Caio advanced to the byline and cut the ball back to Omar Abdulrahman whose angled shot ended up in the away stands behind Ali Khaseif's goal. Rashed Muhayer and Caio came agonizingly close with two efforts from the edge of the area inside the first five minutes after the break.
Al Jazira's most dangerous chance of the macth came in the 79th minute when Leonardo Pereira dribbled down the left wing and sent a cross to the far post that was met by a powerful header from Ailton Almeida. Al Ain goalkeeper Khaled Essa had to produce a top-drawer save to tip Almeida's attempt over the bar for a corner-kick.
Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium erupted as Ali Mabkhout added his 25th league goal of the season. Mbark Boussoufa delivered a cross from the right wing that was flicked on by Almeida onto the path of Mabkhout who applied the finish from point-blank to give Al Jazira the lead late into the match.
Omar Abdulrahman attempted an effort from outside the area, but his low shot ended up on the wrong side of the post in the 88th minute.
Four minutes were added and just before the final whistle, substitute Khalfan Mubarak found Mabkhout with a pass over Al Ain defence and Al Jazira's number 7 finished on the half-volley to make it 2-0 and mark his 26th of the season.
