Arabian Gulf League matchweek 3 concluded with a six-goal thriller at Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium as reigning champions Al Jazira were consigned to a second consecutive defeat with a 2-4 beating at the hands of Al Nasr.
The Saturday night kick-off started off with a bang as Al Nasr's summer signing Marcelo Cirino sent a low cross from the right, Al Jazira goalkeeper Ali Khaseif attempted to clear the ball but his clearance bounced off teammate Musallam Fayez and into the back of the net to give The Blues an early lead inside three minutes.
Al Jazira responded in the 12th minute when left-back Salem Al Eedi sent a curled cross behind Al Nasr defence for the onrushing Ali Mabkhout who finished first time for his second goal of the season.
Five minutes later, The Pride of Abu Dhabi turned it around with a powerful Fares Juma header from a Khalfan Mubarak corner-kick.
The visitors needed just one minute to equalise, striker Wanderley received Mahmoud Khamis' pass inside the area, faked a left-footed shot to get past Juma before placing his finish in the far corner to open his account for the season in the 19th minute.
The match took another twist as Al Nasr midfielder Fawaz Awana was sent-off after he brought down Al Eedi to receive his second yellow card and leave the pitch at the half-hour mark.
There was still room for more action in the opening 45 minutes as Abdelaziz Baradda's free-kick was headed goalward by Wanderley. Khaseif's desperate attempts to save went in vain as the assistant referee waved his flag signalling the ball had crossed the line for a third Al Nasr goal.
Al Nasr boss Cesare Prandelli withdrew Cirino eight minutes after the restart, introducing 21-years-old Rashid Omer. The youngster instantly repaid his manager's faith as he sprinted forward into the penalty area to sweep home Wanderley's cross from the right flank just a minute after his introduction to seal the 4-2 victory.
As the game entered the last minute of added time, substitute Jassim Yaqoob, who had replaced Abdelaziz Baradda, broke free on the counter to find himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper before Al Jazira substitute Eissa Al Otaiba caught him from behind just outside the area. Al Otaiba received a straight red card and Yaqoob wasted the resulting free-kick with what the last kick of the game.
Prandelli's men get their first win of the season to move up to seventh in the table with four points from three games. Al Jazira's struggles continue as the champions find themselves hovering just above the relegation zone with three points at ninth place.
