Al Jazira took another stride towards the title with a dominant 3-0 victory against Al Shabab at Mohamed bin Zayed Stadium in round 23 of the Arabian Gulf League. The result means 59-points Al Jazira could become 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League champions tomorrow should Al Ahli fail to beat Al Wahda tomorrow. The defeat extends Al Shabab's winless run to seven matches as they remain eighth with 26 points.
Ahead of kick-off, Al Jazira fan Mohamed Al Balooshi took to the pitch alongside the players and was honoured for his devotion for supporting the club as part the "Willpower Beats Disability" initiative organised by the Pro League Committee.
Al Jazira got off to a flying start when Arabian Gulf League top goalscorer Ali Mabkhout displayed his natural striker instincts to capitalize on a poor backpass by Al Shabab captain Mohamed Marzooq and coolly slot past Salem Abdulla inside three minutes.
Centre-back Fares Juma continued his impressive goal-scoring streak this season, powering in a ninth minute header from Khalfan Mubarak's corner to make it 2- for the hosts with his sixth goal of the campaign.
Al Shabab defender Mahmood Qassim compounded his team's misery with an own goal as he tried to clear Leonardo Pereira's cross but inadvertently put it past his own keeper for a third Al Jazira goal in the 69th minute.
Al Jazira dominated the proceedings for much of the game and it was all about damage limitation for the visitors as they kept the score at 3-0 till the final whistle.
