News April 4, 2019
Ernest Asante and Ali Mabkhout both bagged braces as Al Jazira earned an important 5-1 win over Al Ain at Mohammad bin Zayed Stadium in matchweek 19 of the Arabian Gulf League on Wednesday.
Al Jazira couldn’t have hoped for a better start, finding the back of the net only three minutes into the game. A long pass from Khalfan Mubarak found Ali Mabkhout outside the box and the latter delivered the ball perfectly to Ernest Asante who fired past Khalid Eisa.
Two minutes before the half-hour mark, the Pride of Abu Dhabi went 2-0 up, thanks to Mabkhout who turned from provider to scorer. Khalfan Mubarak’s defense-splitting pass found Mabkhout who dribbled past the Al Ain defenders and fired home. This marked Mabkhout’s 18th goal in the league this season as he continues to top the goalscoring charts.
Al Jazira missed the services of Khalfan Mubarak in the 41st minute due to injury with Nacer Barazite coming on to replace him.
The final minutes of the first half were filled with drama as Al Ain reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute, before Al Jazira netted a third three minutes later.
With three minutes to go, Caio delivered in a corner kick into the box and Ismail Ahmed, who was left unmarked in the box, rose up and fired an unstoppable header into the back of the net.
Al Jazira, however, refused to stand still and responded quickly to take a 3-1 lead into halftime. Mabkhout continued to impress as he delivered a decisive pass to substitute Barazite on the edge of the box and the Dutch forward curled home past helpless Eisa.
The second half began in a similar vein to the first, with Al Jazira scoring only three minutes after the restart through a quick counter-attack.
Asante found Sebastien Siani’s pass before dribbling past the Al Ain defender to go in a one-on-one situation with Eisa. The Ghanaian forward curled his effort inside the far post to net his second of the night and put his side 4-1 up.
Following the goal, Al Ain piled on the pressure hoping to reduce the deficit. However, attempts from Caio and Marcus Berg either missed the target or were saved by the Al Jazira keeper.
As the Boss were looking to find the back of the net, they conceded a fifth goal to further complicate their situation. Barazite turned from scorer to provider as he sent a pass to Mabkhout inside the box and the latter tapped home to put the win beyond any doubt.
Mabkhout has now equaled Mohamed Omar’s goalscoring record of 132 goals to become the second best goalscorer in the Arabian Gulf League’s history.
Al Ain dropped three important points as they temporarily remain in second place on 38 points, eight points behind leaders Sharjah, who still have a game in hand. Meanwhile, Al Jazira raised their tally to 37 points, and jumped to third place, awaiting Shabab Al Ahli’s clash with Dibba.
