Al Jazira Beats Al Rayyan and Qualify to the 16 Round

Doha: 16 April 2014

A late own goal by Cho Yong Hyung settled a five-goal thriller as Al Jazira of the United Arab Emirates reached the last 16 of the AFC Champions League with a 3-2 away win over Qatari side Al Rayyan on Wednesday.

Walter Zenga started the match with Ali Khaseif; Khalid Sabil, Musallem Fayez, Hyungmin Shin, Hassan Amin; Jucilei Da Silva, Khamis Ismail; Abdullah Qasem, Abdulaziz Barrada, Ali Mabkhout and Felipe Caicedo.

The very early minutes were quiet, but Ali Mabkhout broke the ice when he received Abdulaziz Barrada pass and faced the keeper but he shot the ball in his hands in the 10th minute; he returned to threaten Al Rayyan goal again when he exchanged the ball with Felipe Caicedo and opened shooting angle for himself, but his shot this time went away.

Al Jazira missed another easy chance to score the opener when Abdullah Qasem sent quick cross from the right side and Mabkhout missed it deliberately for Caicedo, who found himself face to face with the keeper, but once again he shot in the keepers’ hands.

Al Jazira pressed the defensive lines of Al Rayyan continuously in the last 15 minutes of the first half, and the crosses and through passed kept coming towards Al Rayyan keeper, but the crowded penalty area denied Mabkhout and Caicedo from using these passes.

Barrada found himself facing the keeper after Caicedo and Mabkhout put him in front, but the Moroccan shot the ball away. Jucilei Da Silva struck strong ball but the keeper with the right post help blocked it away.

Finally, Al Jazira got what they deserved when the referee awarded them a free kick after a foul committed with Hassan Amin. Barrada executed the foul perfectly and put the ball in an impossible angle for the keeper to put Al Jazira in front right before the end of the first half.

Al Jazira had been sloppy in front of goal during the first half and they were punished for their wastefulness when the home side scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half.

Just three minutes after the restart, Lucho Gonzalex was felled in the box by Abdulla Qasem’s clumsy challenge and Yakubu stepped up to send Khaseif the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Mabkhout passed up a great opportunity to restore his team’s lead before Al Rayyan went ahead in the 53rd minute through Haroon, who outjumped the vising defence to head home a Hamid Al Abidi corner.

Al Jazira would get back on level terms, however, on the hour mark as Baradda squared the ball between the legs of Haroon to an unattended Mabhout who easily slotted home.

Baradda tested Al Hajiri again with a couple of free-kicks that the goalkeeper did well to keep out.

But after making another superb save to deny Caicedo, he was final beaten in the last minute of regulation time when Baradda’s corner from the left took a wicked deflection off Cho and squeezed in at the near post despite Al Hajiri’s valiant effort to keep it out.
