Al Jazira Loses and Drops to the Fourth Place

News 10 December 2014
Sharjah picked up an impressive 3 points with a 2-1 victory away at Al Jazira in Round 11 of the Arabian Gulf League. Goals from Yousif Saeed and Wanderley Santos meant Ahmed Al Attas’ equaliser counted for nothing and Al Jazira remain on 21 points, whilst Sharjah move up to 12 points.
Sharjah were the more dangerous of the two sides in the first half, and got their reward three minutes before the break as substitute Abdulla Darwish – on for the injured Bader Abdulrahman after half an hour – crossed for Yousif Saeed to head beyond Khalid Alsenaani and give the visitors a 1-0 lead at the interval.
With Al Jazira missing the likes of top scorer Mirko Vucinic and Argentinian playmaker Manuel Lanzini, it was time for some of their young talent to make a name for themselves, and that is precisely what Ahmed Al Attas did when he came on as a 72nd-minute substitute for Yaser Matar, and two minutes later scored the equalising goal to draw Al Jazira level at 1-1 in the 74th minute. But just four minutes after drawing level, Al Jazira went behind again as Sharjah hit back through a fine strike by Wanderley Santos, who made it 2-1. Things went from bad to worse for the hosts when Khamis Esmail was sent off for his second bookable offence in the 84th minute, and Sharjah also had defender Shahin Abdulrahman dismissed in injury time but managed to hold on for a valuable away victory.
