News
Riyadh, KSA: 11 March 2014

Al Jazira returned from Saudi capital Riyadh with great and well deserved victory over their hosts Al Shabab with 3 goals to 1, when they met them in King Fahd Stadium on the night of Tuesday the 11th of March, as part of the 2nd day matches of the group stage of AFC Champions league.

Walter Zenga started the match with Ali Khaseif; Khalid Sabil. Hyungmin Shin, Musallem Fayez, Abdullah Musa; Jucilei Da Silva, Salim Ali, Abdullah Qasem, Abdulaziz Barrada; Ahmed Al Ghilani and Ali Mabkhout; and missed the match for the injury Felipe Caicedo.

Al Shabab possessed the ball at the first 5 minutes, but their defender Hassan Muaz missed a pass to his goalkeeper without noticing Ali Mabkhout who was inside the area, as he took the ball and put it behind the keeper to give Al Jazira their first goal in the 7th minute.

After this goal with only 4 minutes, Ahmed Al Ghilani led a quick attack from the left side and breached Al Shabab area and pass the ball to Abdullah Qasem, who struck it strongly in the right angle, scoring the second for Al Jazira.

Al Shabab tried to respond to this shocking result and organized several attacks on Al Jazira defensive lines, Salim Ali and Ali Mabkhout received two quick yellow cards during the 39th minute; and in the 40th minute Al Ghilani led another quick attack but he shot the ball in the keeper body.

Al Jazira had another opportunity to add the third when the referee awarded Barrada a free kick right outside the penalty area, Salim Ali used it to sent strong low shot cleared by the keeper to find Al Ghilani who crossed it again but no one from Al Jazira was there to convert it to the goal.

After 3 added minutes, the referee ended this half with Al Jazira leading by 2 clear goals over their Saudi hosts.

In the start of the second half Zenga substituted Salim Ali with Khamis Ismail, and early in this half Al Shabab pulled a goal back through Ahmed Ateef, who netted in the 52nd minute with a shot from outside the area to give Al Shabab a glimmer of hope at getting back into the game.

Four minutes later Al Jazira restored their two-goal advantage, with Ahmad Al Ghilani again the architect as his shot was spilled by Al Shabab’s goalkeeper before Jucilei followed up to turn home the rebound.

In the 65th minute a fantastically struck free kick from distance by Khamis Ismail had to be turned over the crossbar by the fingertips of Al Shabab goalkeeper, and Ali Khaseif made a number of vital saves to protect Al Jazira’s lead and take a 3-1 win back to the UAE.

With this victory, Al Jazira topped the group with 6 points, over Al Shabab and Al Rayyan who have three points and sharing the second place, and Esteghlal who have zero points in the fourth and last place in this group.
