Al Jazira Surrenders Their Lead and Loses to Emirates

Ras Al Khaimah: 10 April 2014
Emirates got a vital three points on the board with a 3-2 win over Al Jazira in Round 23 of the Arabian Gulf League, distancing themselves from the relegation zone on 21 points. With an eye on next week’s AFC Champions League trip to Qatar, Walter Zenga made wholesale changes to his Al Jazira starting lineup, and Emirates, motivated to avoid the drop, outsmarted the unfamiliar XI.
Al Jazira’s new-look side took the lead after 22 minutes from a set piece, as Sultan Bargash curled a left-footed free kick past Abdullah Moosa in the Emirates goal to put the visitors in front.
Just after half an hour it was Al Jazira’s goalscorer who made an important contribution at the other end, bravely blocking a fierce Emirates free kick behind for a corner, but five minutes later his side would be pegged back by an equaliser. Emirates’ Khaled Shamareikh received a pass from Luiz Henrique and turned Juma Abdulla to slot a finish between Khalid Alsenaani’s legs, putting the hosts level at 1-1 in the 35th minute.
Right before half time German Herrera rose highest in the area to head Rodrigo Souza’s free kick against the post as Emirates went close to taking the lead, and seconds later Luiz Henrique’s curling shot from Jamal Maroof’s cutback flew just wide as Al Jazira went into the break on the back foot.
In the second half Emirates thought they had taken the lead through German Herrera, who finished off a well-worked move, but the referee ruled the goal out for a foul on Ahmed Al Ghilani in the build-up. But the home side didn’t have to wait long before getting ahead as Jamal Maroof made it 2-1 in the 58th minute, beating Khalid Alsenaani to a long ball and dinking a finish round the advancing goalkeeper.
Emirates’ back line had to stay alert as they combined to head Yaser Matar’s curling shot off the line, but in the 69th minute a long ball caught Al Jazira out at the back as Jamal Maroof was able to set up Luiz Henrique for a calm cross-goal finish to put Emirates 3-1 in front.
Straight from the kick-off Al Jazira were awarded a penalty as Ahmed Al Ghilani was felled in the area, and Abdelaziz Barrada stepped up to convert from the spot at the second time of asking, to get the visitors back in the game at 3-2.
