Al Jazira came back from a goal down to beat Al Shabab 2-1 in Round 18 of the Arabian Gulf League, courtesy of goals from Ali Mabkhout and Thiago Neves. The hosts had led through Mohammed Ayed at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium, but squandered their advantage to remain on 23 points and slip to 7th place at the close of the round, whilst Al Jazira increase their tally to 22 and move up three places into 8th.

After just 14 minutes Al Shabab’s rhythm was disrupted by a hamstring injury to winger Rashid Hassan, who had to be replaced by the returning Naser Masood. With few chances of note in the opening half-hour, Al Jazira right-back Sultan Al Suwaidi tried his luck with a dipping volley from distance but goalkeeper Salem Abdulla was able to make a comfortable catch. In the 31st minute young midfielder Jassim Salem Johar made excellent headway down the right, skipping past his markers and picking out new signing Juninho Potiguar with a cross, but the Brazilian was horribly wayward with his effort from a promising position. In the 44th minute, though, Al Shabab broke the deadlock as hot prospect Mohammad Juma curled a free kick delivery into the box, and defender Mohammed Ayed directed a looping header beyond Ali Khaseif to put the hosts 1-0 up just before the break.

Both sides made a half-time substitution each; right-back Mahmood Qassim coming off for Ahmed Sulaiman in the like-for-like change by the hosts, whilst Angel Lafita was withdrawn by Henk Ten Cate and young Emirati winger Khalfan Mubarak came on in his place. It was the visitors who came out of the blocks better to start the second half, and by the 59th minute it was 1-1 as a free kick from Thiago Neves was nodded on by Kenwyne Jones to an unmarked Ali Mabkhout in the centre of goal, and the UAE international striker headed past Salem Abdulla to level with his 12th League goal of the season. Both teams were then forced into further substitutions as Khalifa Abdulla and Sultan Al Suwaidi both suffered injuries for the hosts and visitors respectively, with Essa Mohammed and Mohamed Al Abdouli coming on in their places, and in the 77th minute it was Mohammad Juma – the young player nicknamed ‘Pele’ – who came close to regaining the lead for Al Shabab as he dragged an effort narrowly wide of the far post. But two minutes later it was Al Jazira who seized the advantage; Thiago Neves cutting inside Mohammed Ayed and looping a strike from outside the area over the head of Salem Abdulla and into the back of the net to turn proceedings around at 2-1 after 79 minutes, with what was to be the winning goal.
