Al Shabab 2 : 0 Al Jazira. Match Summary

News 10 Oct. 2015
Al Shabab kept up their 100% start in the Arabian Gulf Cup with a 2-1 win over Al Jazira in Round 3 at the Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum Stadium. The result keeps Caio Junior’s side top of Group B with a perfect 9 points from 3 games, whilst Al Jazira have claimed just one point from two fixtures.
In the 18th minute a drilled free kick from Salem Ali was fumbled by Al Shabab goalkeeper Salem Abdulla, but despite slipping through his gloves the ball was hacked away to safety as the visitors came close to taking the lead. In the 23rd minute a thumping free kick by Luvannor Henrique was palmed away unconventionally by Al Jazira goalkeeper Khalid Alsenaani, and moments later a powerful strike from distance by Carlos Villanueva was also turned behind for a corner as the hosts piled on the attacking pressure. In the 28th minute the lively Luvannor broke the offside track to stream clean through on goal, only for a last-ditch tackle by Khalid Sabil to prevent the Moldovan striker from pulling the trigger. In the 43rd minute a fantastic piece of play from former Manchester City man Jo put Manei Mohamed through, but the connection was narrowly missed, and Jo also saw an effort of his own saved as Al Shabab failed to convert their chances into a half-time lead.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute, and it was a tremendous individual effort from Luvannor to put Al Shabab 1-0 up. Tearing down the left wing to run onto Carlos Villanueva’s clever pass, Luvannor charged at Al Jazira’s defence, dancing through their back line before toe-poking a clever finish into the far corner. By the 68th minute it was 2-0; Luvannor’s initial strike being saved by Khalid Alsenaani before Jo hit a left-footed shot into the empty net. Al Jazira were given late hope with the award of a stoppage-time penalty, which Thiago Neves squeezed past Salem Abdulla to cut the score to 2-1, but it was too little, too late as Al Shabab saw out the victory.
