Al Jazira started the second half of the 2016/17 Arabian Gulf League season by recording an important 3-2 victory away at fellow title contenders Al Wasl to open up a 3-point gap over their opponents and go top of the table with 32 points.

An exciting and end-to-end first half saw the visitors take a 13th-minute lead as Ailton Almeida slotted a neat finish beyond Al Wasl goalkeeper Yousef Alzaabi to make it 1-0. The hosts hit back right before the half-hour mark, though, and with quite some panache as Ronaldo Mendes' excellently executed free kick from a tight angle on the back line sailed straight through into the top of Ali Khaseif's net to level proceedings at 1-1 in the 27th minute. By the 35th minute Al Jazira had regained their lead as defender Saif Almeqbali nodded in a set piece delivery, giving the away team the advantage at the half-time interval.

Less than ten minutes into the second half Al Jazira had extended their lead to 3-1 as new signing Leonardo Pereira made a name for himself by winning and scoring a sweet free kick in the 54th minute. Al Wasl managed to cut the deficit to 3-2 as Fabio de Lima netted from a tight angle with a fine individual goal to set up a frantic final 10 minutes, but Al Wasl couldn't find an equaliser to muster anything from the game and Al Jazira held on to take an invaluable 3 points in the title race.
