uae.agleague.ae: 21 Feb. 2019
Two first-half goals helped Bani Yas earn a 2-1 win over Al Jazira at the Bani Yas Stadium in matchweek 16 of the Arabian Gulf League on Thursday.
Bani Yas looked more dangerous in the early stages of the game and needed only 10 minutes to take the lead. Michael Ortega found Yousef Jaber’s cross inside the box and calmly headed the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to give his side a 1-0 advantage. This marked the third goal for the Colombian midfielder with the Sky Blues.
The hosts quickly doubled their lead as they managed to make it 2-0 in the 17th minute through a beautiful goal from Leroy George. The Dutch forward found Suhail Alnoobi’s pass on the edge of the box before entering the area and firing a powerful strike past the Al Jazira keeper Ali Khasif.
Bani Yas came closing to adding a third goal but were denied by Khasif as the scoreline remained at 2-0.
The Pride of Abu Dhabi, however, reduced the deficit seven minutes before the break. The guests were awarded a penalty and Ali Mabkhout struck a low shot that beat the Bani Yas keeper Fahad Al Dhanhani as the 28-year-old took his goal tally to 16.
Khalfan Mubarak’s powerful effort before halftime was saved by Al Dhanhani as the first ended with a 2-1 advantage for the hosts.
Midway through the second half, Al Jazira pushed forward hoping to net an equalizer but Sebastien Siani and Ernest Asante efforts were denied by Al Dhanhani.
Five minutes from time, Fares Juma came closing to leveling the scoreline but his header hit the woodwork as Bani Yas collected a valuable three points.
Following the win, Bani Yas sit fifth on 27 points. Meanwhile, Al Jazira dropped three points in the title race to remain third on 31 points.
