Shabab Al Ahli came from behind to snatch a 2-1 win against reigning champions Al Jazira at Rashid Stadium in the opening game of matchweek 18 of the Arabian Gulf League.

Two minutes after the half-hour mark Saeed Jassim was brought down inside the box by Ali Khaseif prompting the referee to whistle a penalty, but the home side's number 70 Ante Erceg failed to score from the spot as his shot sailed wide of Ali Khaseif's right post.

The hosts posed another threat nine minutes before the break, this time via Ismail Al Hammadi who crossed from the right flank after a brilliant run but Jassim failed to convert into the empty net as Al Hammadi's cross was too fast for him.

In the last minute of the first half the referee awarded another penalty, but this time for the visitors when Khalfan Mubarak was tackled inside the 18-yard box by Al Hammadi, Ahmed Al Hashmi calmly converted the penalty to the left of the goalie to give The Pride of Abu Dhabi the lead at half-time.

Shabab Al Ahli finally found an equalizer in the 77th minute after Jassim received Al Hammadi's perfectly-weighted pass inside the area and netted the ball in easily from point-blank leaving Khaseif helpless.

The home side almost took the lead nine minutes later but Walid Abbas' first time shot from the edge of the box hit the bar as the goalkeeper watched on.

In the dying seconds of the game, Shabab Al Ahli stunned their visitors when Erceg crossed from the left flank to defender Mohammed Marzooq who headed in the winner for Mahdi Ali's men.

Shabab Al Ahli move to within one point of the reigning champions who remain fifth with 25 points.
