Sharjah vs. Al Jazira: The Match Summary

News 13 September 2015
Al Jazira secured their first victory of the 2015/16 Arabian Gulf League season with a 2-1 away win at Sharjah in Round 2. The woodwork twice denied Sharjah in the space of two minutes; first as Maicosuel’s fierce strike came crashing back off the crossbar in the 36th minute, and then again as Wanderley Santos’ effort bounced back off the base of the post, but after two strong chances for the hosts, it was the visiting side who made the breakthrough in the 41st minute; summer signing Jefferson Farfan finding the net for the first time in the Arabian Gulf League since joining Al Jazira from German Bundesliga side Schalke 04. Thiago Neves’ shot was saved by Sharjah goalkeeper Mohamed Yousif but the Peruvian international was on hand to tap in the rebound and earn a 1-0 lead.
In the 73rd minute, half-time substitute Ahmed Alattas doubled Al Jazira’s advantage by making it 2-0 with a header, but in the 81st minute Sharjah grabbed a goal back to cut the deficit to 2-1 as Maicosuel’s curling set piece evaded everyone in the area and crept in at the far post. However, it was too little, too late as the hosts were unable to complete a comeback and Abel Braga’s men headed back to Abu Dhabi with their first three points of the campaign.
