Al Jazira claimed their first victory of the 2025/26 ADNOC Pro League season after edging past Sharjah 1-0 in a tightly contested matchweek 2 encounter on Friday.
The result marked a much-needed response from Al Jazira, who had suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat against Khorfakkan on the opening weekend.
The first half produced few clear chances, with both sides struggling to find their rhythm.
Al Jazira’s new signing Ibrahim Adel had the earliest opportunity in the 38th minute after being set up by Richard Akonnor, but his effort drifted wide of the target.
The second period saw Al Jazira step up the intensity. Adel tested Sharjah’s goalkeeper just after the hour mark with a powerful drive, only to be denied by a fine save.
Moments later, however, the breakthrough arrived. Mamadou Coulibaly’s strike from distance took a decisive deflection, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and nestling into the net to give the Pride of Abu Dhabi the lead.
Sharjah pushed forward in search of an equaliser, with Guilherme Biro coming closest. The Brazilian cut inside from the right flank and looked poised to score, only for Willyan Rocha to produce a perfectly timed intervention to block the effort and preserve Al Jazira’s advantage.
Despite late pressure, Sharjah were unable to break down a resolute Al Jazira defence, as the visitors held firm to secure three valuable points.
The victory lifts Al Jazira off the mark for the season, while Sharjah will look to bounce back quickly as the early race for momentum in the ADNOC Pro League heats up.
